The Nigerian Diaspora Project is aimed at limiting the effect
of “Brain-Drain” by making use of Nigerian experts
(
consultants) residing abroad to provide short-term professional
services at home, for socio-economic development. The activities of the consultants include the followings:
- Deliver specialized lectures, conduct training courses,
exhibitions, symposia, seminars and workshops
- Participate in on-going research projects or initiate
new ones
- Provide training on the use of specialized equipment
- Make recommendations on policy matters
The duration of the visits by consultants will be for one
to four weeks; however, extended visits may also be arranged,
based on specific mutual needs.
Funds for international travel by consultants will come from
any of the followings:
- GEIFON-solicited Travel grants. (Prospective consultants
are encouraged to make suggestions on possible funding agencies
and donors) and
- Personal funds of Consultants (for consultants who
are able to cover the expenses from existing grants or personal
funds).
Consultants will be provided with a round-trip economy air
ticket while the host institution in Nigeria will be responsible
for local expenses (including accommodation, meals and transportation).
Minimal remuneration (in local currency) may be available;
however details of this will be worked out with the host institution
before the visit.
A number of follow-up activities are expected after the consultants’
visits, including the following:
- Initiation of bi-directional study-abroad programs
- Networking and Collaborative proposals writing
- Fellowship opportunities for students and staff
- Donation of books, computers, equipment etc
