The Nigerian Diaspora Project is aimed at limiting the effect of “Brain-Drain” by making use of Nigerian experts (consultants) residing abroad to provide short-term professional services at home, for socio-economic development. The activities of the consultants include the followings:
  • Deliver specialized lectures, conduct training courses, exhibitions, symposia, seminars and workshops
  • Participate in on-going research projects or initiate new ones
  • Provide training on the use of specialized equipment
  • Make recommendations on policy matters

Duration
The duration of the visits by consultants will be for one to four weeks; however, extended visits may also be arranged, based on specific mutual needs.

Funding
Funds for international travel by consultants will come from any of the followings:

  • GEIFON-solicited Travel grants. (Prospective consultants are encouraged to make suggestions on possible funding agencies and donors) and
  • Personal funds of Consultants (for consultants who are able to cover the expenses from existing grants or personal funds).

Welfare
Consultants will be provided with a round-trip economy air ticket while the host institution in Nigeria will be responsible for local expenses (including accommodation, meals and transportation). Minimal remuneration (in local currency) may be available; however details of this will be worked out with the host institution before the visit.

Follow-up Activities
A number of follow-up activities are expected after the consultants’ visits, including the following:

  • Initiation of bi-directional study-abroad programs
  • Networking and Collaborative proposals writing
  • Fellowship opportunities for students and staff
  • Donation of books, computers, equipment etc
